Long's Peak Diamond
This photo shows nearly the entire Casual Route from Broadway
on up. Red dots indicate the belay spots; the lowest red dot is
on Broadway at the base of the D1 pillar.
Climbing the Diamond
Day 1: This is me on the approach to Chasm Lake. The ridge
up and just right of me is the Flying Buttress of Meeker - a classic
5.9 route! The climb follows the narrow arete that separates the
sunlit and shadowed part of the face.
Day 2: Sunrise from the North Chimney - even from low on the
face you can look out over the Twin Sisters onto the eastern plains
of Colorado.
Climbing up North Chimney to Broadway - Amelia is scrambling
up some of the exposed rock slabs above the Mills Glacier.
Amelia seconds the traverse pitch (Pitch 2) with the haul
bag. Nice high angle face climbing with lots of holds.
The classic climbing photo - the buttshot! I'm leading the
fourth pitch (the first pitch up the big dihedral). Ahead of me
is the second climber of the pair that was ahead of us, and his
belayer is looking down the dihedral from the top. I stopped and
belayed just above where the second is in this picture.
Amelia with a big smile, right in the middle of the 5.10 crux
just before Table Ledge, with 1500' of air under her feet - pretty
Casual! Her right hand is in the jam where the fixed pin used
to be.
