Gear
Ropes: everybody has their own preference. Some people
swear by twin ropes, but they have the obvious disadvantage that
you can't climb on one and haul your pack on the other. We took
a 9 mm and a 10.2 mm. Whatever you take, make sure you can rap
at least 150' with them.
Rack: a pretty complete rack with emphasis on middle-sized
pieces; leave off the big stuff (#4 Camalot and above; they're
heavy!). We carried the following, and it seemed like plenty:
- 1 gear sling
- 7 over-the-shoulder length slings
- 1 double length sling
- 8 quick draws w/carabiners (there are still a fair number
of fixed pins you can clip)
- 16 free carabiners & 12 racking carabiners
- Metolius TCUs 0, 1
- Alien 0
- Wild Country Flexible Friends (.5, 1)
- Camalots 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2, 3
- 13 wired stoppers up to #9
- 2 Campbell saddlewedges on slings (similar to large stoppers)
- BD hexcentrics 4, 5, 6, 7
- Total weight = 10 lbs.
We also carried:
- A5 Astropack haul bag/pack 3 lbs.
- Wall-hauler, ascender, cleaning pin/biner 1 lb.
- 1 165' x 10.2 mm rope 7.4 lbs.
- 1 165' x 9 mm rope 5.5 lbs.
- bail gear (slings) 5 oz.
- cell phone 10 oz. (worked fine from base of wall as well as
top)
Personal gear:
- harness, chalk bag, 2 locking biners and belay device, Boreal
Ballet shoes 3 lbs.
- helmet 1 lb.
- Goretex jacket, 2 polypro sweaters, gloves 3 lbs.
- 1.5 liters of water 3 lbs.
Total weight for 2 people: approx. 48 lbs.
