These are the remains of Joseph Shipler, one of the first prospectors in the area. He was also one of the last to leave -- he didn't abandon his claims until 1912, when rheumatism became too much for him. His mine is located roughly 1/2 mile south of the cabins (the trail crosses the tailings). This area was sometimes called Coon Town, named for Marcus Coon, who accompanied Shipler on his first ventures in the area.
