In 1913 and 1914, the Colorado State Highway Department deployed 38 convicts to build the eastern portion of what became Fall River Road. The convicts, all from the Colorado Penitentiary, were housed in cabins near Upper Horseshoe Park. The remains of the cabin remained mostly intact by the 1940's. Today, very little trace remains -- only a few small logs near an aspen grove, pictured here. A small sign is nearby, at a pullout on Fall River Road.
